fb fights with my mom’s friends
so my mom posted this picture on her wall. she does stuff like this then gets railroaded by the idiots our conservative hometown. so sometimes i feel obligated to back her up.

some lady: I don’t belive in abortion so don’t expect me to pay for yours. I don’t care about birth control but I don’t want to pay for yours. The others are irrelevant.
-
lp: it’s also a fact that when unwanted pregnancies occur the solution isn’t to force women to carry them to term. it’s also a fact that birth control and safe sex prevent abortions from occurring and limited access to both birth control and abortions does more harm than good. we currently have a choice in that matter and i’d rather not lose it.
-
some lady: No one, other than rape cases, can become pregnant without making a decision to have sex. It is not my responsibility to tell people whether or not they can have sex. I’ll stay out of their bedroon. But, it is also not my responsibility to pay for their choices. So they can stay out of my wallet. No one is telling you that you do not have a choice in birth control. There are many types of birth control, pick one and use it responsibly. Just don’t expect me to pay for it. A huge majority of the people who say they can’t afford birth control manage to pay for the other things they want in life, cigs, alcohol, getting manicures and pedicures, etc. Don’t get your nails done and buy your birth control. Make a responsible decision.
-
lp: while it is a fair and good thing of you to acknowledge a person’s right to sex and the plight of the pregnant rape survivor, i have to say it’s a gross and offensive statement to make that women who use birth control and can’t afford it are the type to put “the other things they want in life” above their health and well-being. women’s health is not a bargaining chip nor is covering it a question of morals or values.
-
some lady: A woman’s health is ultimately her responsibility. I used birth control as a single woman. I was broke most of the time. Paula knew me in college, we were all broke most of the time. I still managed to pay for my college and my OWN birth control. My body, my responsibility, noone elses. And, I stick to my statement that “A huge majority of women who say they can’t afford birth control manage to pay for the other things they want in life.” I cannot tell you how many times I’ve sat next to women who are getting their nails done and they have no job! What the hell? Do whatever you want with your body, just don’t expect me to pay for it. I’ve been flat out broke, you can’t fool me. Been there.
-
lp: i’m flat out broke right now, as we speak. i also work 40 hours a week and share a bedroom. i use birth control provided by a government funded agency. i do not put alcohol, drugs, manicures, cars, or clothes before my health care needs. perhaps there are women who do, but there are people who would rather eat junky food than healthy food putting their preferences before their health, people who’d rather pay for better elevators and escalators than to take the stairs putting their comfort before their health, people who’d rather build jails than schools putting the problem before the solution. we don’t need to pick and choose the things we think are right and wrong for certain populations, we need to find the solutions that best serve us as a whole.
-
some lady: Wonderful thoughts all. I’m still in no way responsible for your birth control or your abortions if needed. You do not need birth control to survive. You need food, you need a roof over your head to protect you from the elements, you need an education to be successful in finding work, you need life saving health care. You do not need birth control.
-
lp: i do need birth control. be it for family planning, regulating my period, or just the life saving services offered by agencies such as planned parenthood that provide birth control. and by saying i do not is insinuating that the voting public has a right to make decisions about my present and future personal life.
-
some lady: If you need it then you pay for it. Your NEED, Your BILL, Your RESPONSIBILITY. Your mention of planned parenthood is as far as I go with this conversation.
DOES PLANNED PARENTHOOD ENRAGE YOU THAT MUCH? OH MY FUCKING GOD. that’s what i really wanted to say. but instead i was classy and respected my mom.
also cory is my queen and joined the fight. god bless you sweet princess of whiskey.
